From the desk of

Margaret Rex

Hudson, New York

Dear You,

Hi, I’m Margaret. I live in Hudson, upstate New York with my 2 dogs, a husband I’m probably going to keep, and a 1964 Olivetti Lettera 32 typewriter that I write LOTS of books about love on (for all you typewriter lovers out there it’s the blue-grey one. Mine is scratched around the edges, with a cigarette burn somewhere on the case.)

And I want to give you Book #1 in my bestselling Romance Noir series, The 7 Most Dangerous Love Stories In The World, 100% free - right here, right now.

Seven love stories you shouldn't love.

Six dark love stories from some wonderful up-and-coming writers I’ve discovered — and one from me. And these aren't seven stories about nice people meeting nice people and making sensible decisions. God, no.

There's a woman who falls in love with two brothers — and discovers that choosing between them might be the worst thing she could possibly do.

There's a lovely little queer hockey romance about two men who are supposed to hate each other in public and absolutely cannot stay away from each other in private.

There's a woman who is given three nights at a masked ball where nobody uses their real name — and on the third night, she discovers exactly who the man behind the mask is that she's been undressing for.

There's a woman whose new bodyguard has been hired to protect her from a man who wants her dead. Unfortunately, she isn't entirely sure which of them she should be afraid of.

There's a married woman who discovers that her husband has been keeping a second apartment. Not for another woman. For something much stranger.

There's a woman who returns to the tiny town she escaped fifteen years ago and finds the boy she left behind has grown into exactly the kind of man her mother warned her about.

And then there's mine. A love story about a woman who knows perfectly well that loving him will destroy her life — and decides that might be a price worth paying.

Seven stories. Seven women (and men) making decisions they probably shouldn't make.

And hopefully seven occasions where you find yourself saying:

Oh, for fuck's sake. Don't do it.

And then immediately turning the page because, obviously, you desperately want them to do it.

That's the kind of stories I'm writing most days. I call it Romance Noir.

And if you're even slightly interested in dark romance, dangerous attraction, bad decisions, forbidden love, obsession, secrets, lies, jealousy, sex, heartbreak and people falling desperately in love with exactly the wrong person... I made this book for you.

Now, I should probably confess something.

There's a reason I'm giving it to you for free.

It's a dirty little bribe.

Every day I write a ridiculously popular little daily dark-romance newsletter about love, marriage, sex, betrayal, secrets, husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends and the occasionally spectacular mess human beings make when they decide they love somebody.

Some are funny.

Some are sad.

Some are filthy.

Some will make you furious.

And every now and then I'll send you something that makes you think: Jesus, Margaret, you can't write that.

That's the idea, anyway.

So I'm bribing you with these seven dangerous love stories in the hope that you'll let me turn up in your inbox most days.

But before we do that, and before we can even think about becoming friends, there’s one thing you should probably know about me.

I don't like weak women.

There. I said it.

I don't mean women who are scared. Or heartbroken. Or trapped. Or women who've had terrible things happen to them. That’s not weak. That’s Monday for most of us.

What I mean is that I don't particularly want to spend 300 pages with a woman who sits around waiting for somebody else to decide what happens to her.

Give me the woman who does something.

Maybe it's the wrong thing (actually, it's usually way more interesting when it's the wrong thing).

She sleeps with the person she absolutely shouldn't sleep with. She marries them. Leaves them. Goes back. Lies. Saves herself. Saves somebody else. Tells someone to go fuck themselves and then lies awake until four in the morning wishing she hadn't.

Whatever.

But she does something.

That's my kind of woman.

I don't mean a woman who belongs to some man. Quite the opposite. I mean a woman who belongs to herself.

She can be twenty-five or sixty-five. Married. Divorced. Single. Widowed. Rich. Broke. A mother. A CEO. A waitress. A housewife. Or a woman standing in the middle of the wreckage wondering how the hell her perfectly normal Tuesday turned into this.

She doesn't have to be fearless.

She doesn't have to have her shit together.

She just needs to have some fight in her.

Because here's the thing people forget about strong women.

They still want love.

They get lonely.

They want sex. They get jealous.

They want romance. They want to be wanted.

They get their hearts broken.

They make spectacularly bad decisions about people they absolutely know better than to fall in love with.

And sometimes, when their whole world has gone to hell, they still want somebody to put their arms around them and say: I've got you.

Being strong doesn't make you immune to any of that.

Bad bitches need love too.

Love,

Margaret (the alleged Queen of Romance Noir) Rex

At twenty-five, I started an advice column called Dear Maggie for a small newspaper in upstate New York. I was absolutely convinced I was going to be the next Dear Abby and, despite having very little evidence that I knew what I was talking about, had an opinion on absolutely everything.

Marriage. Dating. Jealousy. Affairs. Mothers-in-law. Men who suddenly stopped calling.

Then life happened.

I worked at Vogue, wrote copy for the J. Peterman catalog, spent years at Ogilvy & Mather, covered crime for a newspaper, got married, had children and, somewhere along the way, became a bestselling novelist.

But the strangest thing happened.

The letters never really stopped.

Women still found me. They still wrote about husbands, boyfriends, affairs, heartbreak, sex, secrets and all the wonderfully complicated mess we make of loving one another.

And somewhere along the way, I realised most of them weren't really asking me for an answer.

They just wanted somewhere to say it out loud.

So after all these years, I've started sharing and talking about the letters again — one most days.

I don't pretend to know the answers anymore.

But I still have opinions.

I Think You're Going To Like This Next Bit

These are the women I write about.

Ordinary women who find themselves in extraordinary situations.

Dangerous marriages. Forbidden rooms. Strange cities. Men they can't trust. Beds they probably shouldn't be in.

Sometimes they make good decisions.

Sometimes spectacularly bad ones.

But they're always their decisions.

I've been called The Queen of Romance Noir.

I don't know about that.

It sounds like I should own a crown.

I don't.

I own a lot of books, several ashtrays and two dogs who ignore almost everything I say.

But I've written a lot of love stories.

And people seem to still read them.

And like every writer who's ever sat alone in a room making shit up for a living, I want more people to read mine.

So I had an idea.

Why don't I give you one for free?

And I don't mean give you three chapters and then, just as somebody's taking their clothes off, stick a credit-card form in front of you.

I mean give you the whole damn book.

Beginning to end.

The complete first book from one of my bestselling series (yes, I know I sound conceited writing that, but I can't help it if everybody loves me :)

75,421 words.

Twenty-five chapters.

The whole shebang.

Completely 100% free.

My evil plan was that if you like it, then maybe when I write the next one you might consider buying that.

But then I started thinking about how when I was growing up, there was something I loved more than cigarettes and tongue kissing.

Serialized stories.

I'd follow a story in a magazine and wait for the next part to come out.

Obsessively.

You couldn't just press NEXT EPISODE.

You couldn't stay up until three in the morning and binge the entire damn thing.

You had to wait.

And during that wait, something wonderful happened.

You thought about it.

You wondered what she was going to do.

Whether he was lying.

Whether she'd go back.

Whether she'd finally sleep with him.

Whether that terrible thing you suspected was about to happen was actually going to happen.

And then you'd get one of those endings.

You know the kind.

Something terrible has just happened.

You know there's a shitstorm coming.

And...

That's it.

See you next week.

Fucking torture.

I loved it.

Because for the next few days, the story lived in your head.

And I think we've lost a little of that.

Everything is instant now.

Every episode.

Every song.

Every book.

Every answer.

Everything we want, the second we want it.

And I'm not convinced that's made everything better.

Because anticipation is delicious.

Sometimes wanting something is almost as pleasurable as having it.

Maybe more.

So I thought... let's bring that feeling back.

And that's how we're doing this.

One chapter.

Twice a week.

Tuesday and Friday.

Delivered to you, privately via email ('cause some bits are raunchy as hell).

Twenty-five chapters over twelve weeks.

You get Tuesday's chapter.

And then you wait.

You think about it.

You wonder.

Then Friday comes.

And we do it all over again.

And something interesting happened when I started doing this.

People liked the stories.

At least they tell me they do.

Obviously I'm hardly an impartial judge.

But what they really started talking about was the feeling.

Waiting for Tuesday.

Wondering what happens Friday.

Messaging somebody else who's reading it.

Being furious with me for ending an episode where I did.

Thinking about a character while they're driving to work.

Knowing there's a shitstorm coming and having three whole days to imagine just how bad it's going to be.

That's what we're doing here.

It's not just about you reading a love story.

It's about you having one to look forward to.

And I fucking love that.

So here's the deal.

I'm giving you the complete first book from my bestselling My Wedding Nightmare series.

All twenty-five episodes.

Emailed personally to you every Tuesday and Friday for the next twelve weeks.

Beginning to end.

Completely 100% free. On me.

And I'll also write a friendly little email to you every day about all the things that go into writing these books.

Love.

Sex.

Marriage.

Heartbreak.

Men.

Women.

All the ridiculous, wonderful, occasionally catastrophic things we do to each other because we don't want to go through life alone.

That's free too.

Why?

Because love is like cigarettes.

We know it'll kill us. But we do it anyway. Because somehow, it makes everything better.

And One More Thing

You can't buy this book anywhere else, anymore.

Not on Amazon. Not in a bookstore. Not even somewhere else on this site.

For now, I've taken Book One in My Wedding Nightmare Series off the shelf completely and I'm using it for this slightly mad experiment: I'd rather give it away and find new readers than sell it.

So this is the only place you can get it.

The complete book. Twenty-five episodes. Delivered privately to you over twelve weeks.

No shortened version. No sample. No catch. The whole damn story — free.

I hope you have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.

Margaret

P.S. If you skipped straight to the bottom, here's the whole thing in thirty seconds. I'm Margaret Rex. I started writing a little advice column called Dear Maggie when I was twenty-five, went on to work at Vogue, J. Peterman and Ogilvy & Mather, covered crime for a newspaper, and somewhere along the way became a bestselling novelist.

Now I'm trying a little experiment. I want to find some new readers, so instead of asking you to buy one of my books, I'm giving you one.

The entire first book from my bestselling My Wedding Nightmare series. All 25 episodes, delivered privately every Tuesday and Friday over 12 weeks. You can't buy this particular book on Amazon, in a bookstore or anywhere else. This is the only place you can get it, and it's completely free.

Why would I do that? Because I'm hoping you'll love it. And if you do, maybe you'll stick around and buy the next story I write. And the one after that. That's the whole sinister plan.

No credit card. No three-chapter teaser. No catch.

Just give me your email and I'll give you the whole damn book.

Questions Other People Have Asked Me Before They Joined In On All The Fun...

❧ Is this book completely free?

Yes. Completely. No credit card and no payment hidden somewhere down the road. I'm giving you the entire book because I want you to read my stuff. If you love it and eventually buy another one of my books, wonderful. That's the plan.

❧ Do I get the whole book?
Every word. My Wedding Nightmare is a complete approximately 75,000-word novel told across 25 episodes. This isn't one of those “free book” offers where you discover you've actually been given three chapters and a sales pitch.

❧ Are the stories explicit?
Not exactly. I’d call them suggestive with good manners. Nothing you’d be embarrassed to read on a train (unless the train is very quiet).

❧ Why don't you give me the whole book at once?
Because that would ruin the fun. You'll receive a new episode every Tuesday and Friday for 12 weeks. I grew up loving serialized stories and the delicious torture of having to wait to find out what happens next. That's the experience I'm bringing back.

❧ Can I simply just buy this somewhre else?

No. Right now, you can't buy this particular book anywhere — not Amazon, not a bookstore, not somewhere else on this site. The Love Secret is currently the only place you can read it.

❧ What happens when I sign up?

Episode One will be sent to you, then the story continues every Tuesday and Friday. You'll also join The Love Secret and receive my short daily email about love, sex, marriage, heartbreak and the ridiculous things human beings do to each other.

❧ What exactly is Romance Noir?

Dark, dangerous love stories about women with some fight in them. Our heroines can be frightened, heartbroken, horny, reckless and spectacularly wrong about men — but they're never just sitting around waiting for someone else to decide their lives.

❧ What is My Wedding Nightmare about?

An ordinary woman finds herself married to the wrong man, trapped in a world she doesn't understand and dangerously attracted to the one person who might make everything worse. It's really good, even after all these years.

❧ What happen after the 12 weeks?

The story ends. No endless cliffhanger requiring you to pay to discover what happened. If you've enjoyed it, I'll have other Romance Noir stories for you. Those won't necessarily be free — a girl does have to make a living.

❧ Can I unsubscribe anytime?

Of course. There's an unsubscribe link in every email. No hard feelings. Well, perhaps slightly hurt feelings. But I'll survive.

❧ What's the catch?

There isn't one. I'm a bestselling novelist looking for new readers. I'm betting that if I give you one of my books and you love it, sooner or later you'll want another.

❧ Will I sell your email or spam you?
God no. I hate that shit. Your email is safe with me. I only use it to send you my ravings about writing love stories, or to let you know when I’ve written something new that I think you might like.

❧ How will you read the book?
However you damn well like.

Each new episode will be delivered directly to your email every Tuesday and Friday, so you can simply open it and start reading.

We'll also give you options for reading on your preferred e-reader or device — whether that's a Kindle, tablet, phone or something else. The whole point is to make this a lovely reading experience, not make you fight with technology.

You choose how you want to read it. I'll make it easy (and by that I mean Jennifer who does all my techy stuff will make it easy).

❧ Can you read past stories?
Nope. There’s no archive. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. I like it that way—it makes them feel more like little secrets, shared in the moment. If you want the story, you’ve got to show up. Just like in love.

❧ Who is this really for?
Anyone who wants more love in their life. Not just romance—though there’s plenty of that—but the feeling of being connected, seen, delighted, surprised. If you’re someone who likes a good story, and has a good heart, I think we’ll get along just fine.

❧ So what do I do next?

Give me your email address. I'll give you the book. We both get a happy ending, and nobody gets hurt.
